f Project KAAPSTAP: 2013

Sunday 27 January 2013

Thankyou, Nyabonga, Dankie, 감사, Gracias

To all the people/organisations who supported the project and helped make it a success, I'd like to thank you and the following for your support:

Barloworld Logistics
Nike
The Rotary International
The South African Treasure Route
All local municipalities along the N12
Dr Rowan of  NutriTherapy - for all the supplements that kept me going.
The public - who provided their homes, food, smiles and support during the trip - you know who you are!
The support drivers - M.C. de Jager, Johan Taljaart & John Hayes.

I'd like to thank my friends and family in particular who supported me, helped me, aided me, loaned me money, cheered me on, believed in me, danced with me, fed me, cried with me, walked with me, encouraged me and all in all were there for me during the journey to make a dream a reality - I thank you and I love you!

...and of course QASA, who were affiliated with us from the start and helped make Project KAAPSTAP a success.

Day 47 - 16 January 2013

I was not allowed to walk through the Du Toits Kloof tunnel and the road over the mountain had no shoulder and many trucks on the road, so we drove over and started again where the toll road ended.
Any problem has a solution! :)

Road safety still strong in Laingsburg

Thanks guys for trying to keep our roads safe :)

Laingsburg Breakdown :(

And so it happened. Our support vehicle's engine got a water leak and cracked the head on the engine block. :(
Luckely we had Ian Lategan and his team to tow us in and strip the engine.
We managed to get a rental and now the show can go on tomorrow :)
Anybody out there that wants to help us get the bakkie back to Pretoria? Please contact Gerhard on 083 555 0061 or e-mail gerhard@statusms.co.za

Wonderful official entry to Laingsburg

As we entered town today we had Police escourts, local kids from town walking 10km with me as well meetimg the mayor and staying at Herambi Guest house for free! What a town :)

The Woman Traveling the Universe

I met up today, on my way to Laingsburg, a woman from Korea, who is on her way to Egypt! She started solo from Cape Town on a bicycle on the 1st of Jan 2013 and will travel for a year to get there. What a pleasant meet with a fellow traveler. Good luck Jin, I wish you all the best. One can check out her journey on http://en.universewithme.com/africa/

Amazing what people get up to...

Karoo strangeness...

What starts with confusion and ends with weird?

Dor, Droë, Klein Karoo

Final goodbye at Suretta's in B/West

The slow cooked lamb last night before the final goodbye was amazing! Almost had to do dishes...

We left for the busstop early, only to find the bus arriving more than an hour late!
Thanks Johann for driving us the last two weeks! Job well done!

Decade of action for Road Safety

And here just outside B/West we cought up with the Drive More Safely team who is working with the authorities to ensure that there are child seats in cars with children. Keep up the good work guys!

Pledge challenges update

Pledge challenges have been made and some posted since 29 December 2012. For those people following the share price of Barlow World, it increased from R72.79 on 29/11 to R89.70 on 4 January. An increase of R16.91 so far. A pledge of R200 per R1 share increase translates to almost R3400 at this stage. I swear I can smell the ocean!

Meeting in Paradise

The guys from Paradise Padstal met us with open arms and some lunch as we passed through Victoeia West. What a great bunch of guys.
And look who popped in as well: Andy Smith. Here is what he had to say:
"On my way back from the Cape, 5km outside Victoria West I noticed a lone walker on the road. At 120km/h you flash by so quickly but wondered if it was Johann, the guy walking from Pretoria to Cape Town in aid of the QASA Arrive Alive campaign. We carried on, discussing the chances it was him...we thought it strange that there was no back up vehicle. After 20km I was certain it must have been him so I turned around to find him to offer him a drink, encourage, praise and thank him for his efforts. By the time we caught up with him he had reached a roadside watering hole and was with his back up crew. He looked in great shape. Well done Johann!
